I’m a huge fan of lightpainting photography. It’s an art style where the photographer has the camera on a tripod or similarly stable surface in a mostly to completely dark room or area. The shutter in the camera is usually set to a very long exposure; these pictures all had a 20 second length! A light source of some kind is moved around in front of the camera while the shutter is open. These can range from something as simple as a penlight to a gadget created specifically designed for this style. The Pixelstick is one such device: a six-foot long rod with 200 full-color LEDs that can be programmed to run nearly any pattern downloaded into it. For this shoot, I was looking for a kind of Miami/vaporwave vibe. I took the Pixelstick for ‘a walk’, so to speak, around the pool in my parent’s backyard. Different movements of the Pixelstick created these unique patterns.
